The Many Faces of Tapestry with Jean Selvy- Wyss

This 3-day workshop is about tapestry weaving and discovering the
limitless way fiber can inspire expression. We will cover the
techniques and terms used, design, type and differences in looms,
yarn variety and more. Tapestry weaving uses only one weave
structure, Over Under, the simple standard weave. Simple but there
are many ways to use this technique to enhance your design. Looms
and yarn will be provided. If you have a loom feel free to bring it.

| Requirements: | A curiosity about the techniques used in tapestry weaving and a desire to "give it a go". Materials to bring: Scissors Big eye needle Notebook, pencil, easer A Photo you like, something that catches your eye about it. Simple lines, (a landscape, flowers, shadows, buildings, close ups. ) If you have a tapestry loom, please bring it otherwise one will be provided to use. |

| Instructor Bio: | Jean Selvy-Wyss has been weaving tapestries for over 40 years. Her first exposure to weaving was in college. When she graduated from Emporia State University in Kansas with a BS in Art in 1977. With a move to Rapid City ,SD, she apprenticed with a Norwegian Master Weaver for two and 1/2 years and have had numerous opportunities to work with national and international fiber artists. Jean has a resume of many shows in Denver, Co, Portland, Or., Vancouver, Canada, and Rapid City, SD. She received the Rushmore Honor Award from the Rapid City Chamber of Commerce 2007, and an artist grant from the SD Arts Council in 2006. Jean explores and researches new techniques, design, and color study for the development of her craft. Many of her designs were inspired from the Black Hills where lives, and from her travels to different countries and national parks. Working in series allows her to pursue a concept. In 2023 , she had an solo exhibition at the Dahl Arts Center in Rapid City, SD with 40 tapestries, including several woven 3-D sculptures. She continues to develop new concepts in using the woven structure of tapestry in her sculptures as well as large format tapestries. |
